Style of wedding

Think about the style of wedding you would like and the theme. Country-house look, vintage, boho, classic, relaxed.

Get some ideas down

When you first start thinking about your dress it can be a little overwhelming as there is so much choice. I would advise starting a Pinterest board and you will soon see a common theme running through the styles you are pinning.  This will really help you to see what you like and dislike.

Budget

Have a budget in mind; there will definitely be a huge range of dresses which fall within you theme across all price points.

What’s your style?

Have a think about the kind of dresses you know suit you already.  Most people know if they feel comfortable and confident in strapless dresses or halter necks, for example.

Try on as soon as you can

Start trying on dresses as soon as possible and don’t feel under any pressure to make decisions.  Have fun, be open-minded and start to home in on the style of dress which makes you feel extra special. Also, try dresses on that you maybe wouldn’t normally – you never know.

Be comfortable

Don’t feel restricted in your dress, you need to be able to have the party of your life once the formalities are over.

Seasonality

Think about the time of year and your venue. If it’s a winter wedding, you may need a coverup or wrap, or if it’s a beach wedding then you need a dress that will travel well and is suitable for the climate.

Additional tones

Think about colour highlights. You could have a contrasting petticoat, sash, shoes, embellishments.  Don’t be afraid to express yourself and your personality.

Know your tribe

Only bring your biggest fans with you when you try on dresses.  Bring people who will support your choices, fill you full of confidence and not impose their vision of the perfect dress.

Don’t wait for the weight

Don’t worry about your weight! If you intend to shed a few pounds and you are having a bespoke dress made to measure, please let your dress maker know so that the dress will fit you perfectly on your wedding day.

Undies and shoes

Think about undies and shoes.  Once you know the neckline and style of dress then you will know the appropriate underwear – remember, comfort is key.

I love working with brides-to-be to create the perfect dress for them using my years of experience. I am passionate about keeping all aspects of my business British made, having spent many years in factories overseas and my brides love that they are wearing a UK creation. More about this in a future blog post!
